Highlights
- First comprehensive meta-analysis of 34 studies including 761,511 singleton pregnancies examining the association between pre-pregnancy underweight and perinatal outcomes among Japanese women.
- Maternal underweight significantly increases the risk of low birth weight (odds ratio [OR] 1.61), small for gestational age (OR 1.59), and preterm birth (OR 1.23).
- Infants born to underweight mothers had a mean birth weight 115g lower than those born to normal weight mothers.
- Despite its high prevalence in Japan, underweight remains significantly associated with adverse perinatal outcomes, similar to patterns observed in other populations.
