Highlights
- This study investigated the association between community-level social capital and all-cause mortality among community-dwelling older Japanese adults in an urban area.
- Higher neighborhood cohesion was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality among older men, but not among women.
- Specifically, men aged 65–74 years residing in communities with strong neighborhood cohesion had a 17 –18% lower mortality risk.
- The findings suggest that men who typically have fewer social networks and support systems benefit more from residing in cohesive communities.
