Highlights
- We analysed cancer screening rates in Japan between 2013 and 2022, considering the potential impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
- Despite overall improvements in cancer screening rates, clear socioeconomic inequalities across all cancers, with higher socioeconomic status consistently associated with higher screening rates, were observed.
- The COVID-19 pandemic led to slight declines in cancer screening rates in Japan.
- Individuals in low-education and low-occupational classes were more affected by the COVID-19 pandemic-related declines in cancer screening, contributing to widening socioeconomic inequalities.
