The main changes are as follows.
- The new publication fee is 180,000 JPY per article for non-members. For papers of 8 published pages or more, both members and non-members alike will be charged a further 10,000 JPY for each additional page exceeding 7 pages.
- Becoming a member of the JEA will be no longer mandatory.
- The maximum length of Study Profiles will be 3500words.
- Abstracts for Review articles and Study Profiles can be either structured or unstructured.
- The status of data availability should be included in the manuscript.

The new publication fee will be applicable to new submissions from August 1, 2021. Also, becoming a member of the JEA will be no longer mandatory, even for submissions from Japan. However, please note that publication fees will differ depending on membership status.
The new publication fee will be 180,000 JPY per article for non-members. Other fees remain unchanged as follows.
・Japan Epidemiological Association (JEA) members: 70,000 JPY per article, Non-members:180,000 JPY per article. To qualify for the member discount, both the first author and corresponding author must be JEA members at the time of submission.
・Both members and non-members alike will be charged a further 10,000 JPY for each additional page exceeding 8 pages.
・Publication of letters will cost 10,000 JPY per letter regardless of membership status. There are no charges for responses to letters.
・Publication of erratum will cost 10,000 JPY per page for members and non-members alike.
According to the changes above, we will update our Guide for Authors. Please follow the new Guide for Authors if you submit your new manuscript to Journal of Epidemiology from August 1, 2021.

Advance Publications (J-STAGE)
Japan Epidemiological Association (JEA) has decided to move publication of Journal of Epidemiology from Elsevier to J-STAGE in January 2018. Work is in progress to publish the last issue, Vol. 27 No 12, on ScienceDirect and to enable advance online publication of articles to be published in Vol. 28 on J-STAGE as soon as possible.
An online submission/review system of the Journal of Epidemiology returned to ScholarOne Manuscripts on December 1, 2016. You can access to the new Instructions to Authors now.
Guide for Authors
Editorial Board of Journal of Epidemiolgoy has decided to return to use ScholarOne Manuscripts for the online submission/review system. We introduced EVISE by Elsevier this August, but it caused serious problems in our submission/review process. We apologize all the readers/researchers/reviewers involved in Journal of Epidemiology for inconveniences through EVISE.
A new online submission/review system of the Journal of Epidemiology, EVISE will launch on August 1, 2016. A website featuring new instructions is currently being developed. Please follow the new Guide for Authors if you submit your new manuscript to the Journal of Epidemiology after August 1, 2016.
Online submission/review system of Journal of Epidemiology has a problem with the email function. Please check the junk folder frequently and try to avoid setting the forwarding option in your email server/account.
In order to further internationalize our journal, Japan Epidemiological Association (JEA) has decided to move publication of Journal of Epidemiology from J-STAGE to Elsevier in January 2017. Due to this change, article processing charges (APC) will be renewed accordingly. The decision was made at the January 2016 board of directors meeting, and a contract with Elsevier was signed on March 14, 2016. Work is in progress to launch a new online submission system (EVISE) by Elsevier, and to enable preliminary online publication (Articles in Press) of articles which have been accepted for publication in 2017.
The new APC will be applicable to articles submitted from June 1, 2016. The new fees will be as follows.
・Members 70,000 JPY per article; Non-members 120,000 JPY per article.
・Members and non-members alike will be charged 10,000 JPY per page when the article exceeds 8 pages.
・Publication of Letters will cost 10,000 JPY per Letter notwithstanding membership.
・There are no charges for responses to Letters.

Journal of Epidemiology - changes to article processing charges

The cost of publishing the Journal continues to increase. To meet these rising costs, the Board of the Japan Epidemiological Association (JEA) elected to increase page charges at its meeting on November 7, 2014. All manuscripts submitted to the Journal on or after January 1, 2015 will be charged 10,000 Japanese yen per published page for nonmembers of JEA. Manuscripts submitted before January 1 can take advantage of the old rate. The publication fee for JEA members will remain unchanged.

To achieve a "gold" open-access policy, the Japan Epidemiological Association (JEA) is happy to announce a change in copyright policy to a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported (CC-BY) License , for research published on an open-access basis in the Journal of Epidemiology. As a result of this change, users of the journal will be able to reuse content in any way they like, provided it is accurately attributed. Copyright stays with the agreed copyright owner.
According to the conditions of this change, articles accepted on or after April 1, 2013 will automatically be published under the CC-BY License. Articles accepted before March 31, 2013, whose copyright belongs to JEA, will also be published under the CC-BY License. Dr. Tomotaka Sobue was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Epidemiology after the former Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Hiroyasu Iso, was elected Executive Head of the Japan Epidemiological Association on January 26, 2013. In addition, six new associate editors have joined the journal, to assist in managing the increased number of submissions.
The cost of publishing the Journal continues to increase. To meet these rising costs, the Board of the Japan Epidemiological Association (JEA) elected to increase page charges at its meeting on January 24, 2013. All manuscripts submitted to the Journal on or after April 1, 2013 will be charged 5000 Japanese yen per published page (for JEA members) or 7500 Japanese yen per published page (for nonmembers). Manuscripts submitted before April 1 can take advantage of the old rate.

J-STAGE3 (Online journal for Journal of Epidemiology) will be released on May 1, 2012 (Japan time).
All submissions that are accepted for publication in the Journal of Epidemiology are subject to mandatory pay page charges of 5,000 Japanese Yen (JPY) for each journal page exceeding 3 printed pages (starting April 1, 2010). If senior or corresponding author of the paper is a member of Japan Epidemiological Association, the page charge is discounted by 5000 JPY. In addition, if the senior and corresponding authors can prove in documents that they have the nationality of the countries of lower economies of World Bank, and live in the corresponding country, the page charge is not required.
