疫学研究者の今と未来を考えよう：国際比較から見る研究環境と若手研究者の現在地
Reimagining the Present and Future of Epidemiology in Japan: International Perspectives on Research Environments and Early-Career Scientists.

日本の研究力低下が指摘される中、疫学研究者を取り巻く環境も大きく揺れています。本セッションでは、OECD（経済協力開発機構）や NISTEP（科学技術・学術政策研究所）の国際比較データを用いて、日本の研究投資、大学セクター、若手研究者の雇用状況を整理します。また、韓国の若手研究者にも最新の状況をご紹介いただき、各国の制度や仕組みを共有しながら、日本の研究者が持続的に活躍できる環境とは何かを一緒に考える場とします。

Japan’s scientific competitiveness has declined over the past two decades, and the environment surrounding epidemiology is no exception. This session provides an international comparison of Japan’s research system using indicators from OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), NISTEP (National Institute of Science and Technology Policy), and other global data sources, focusing on research investment, the university research sector, and employment conditions for early-career researchers. We highlight key structural challenges—including the rise of fixed-term and non-regular positions, reduced research time due to clinical or educational duties, and limited institutional support for long-term, data-intensive epidemiologic projects. A young epidemiologist from Asia will also share insights into current developments and support systems in their country. By examining these issues from a policy and systems perspective, the session aims to clarify where Japanese epidemiology stands today and what is needed to build a sustainable and globally competitive environment for future researchers.
