I have been asked to be the chairman for the 31st Annual Meeting of the Japanese Epidemiological Association. It was initially planned to be held in Saga City for three days from January 27th (Wednesday) to 29th (Friday), 2021. However, in consideration that it would be difficult to think the coronavirus epidemic would end by that time, and as a result of consideration by the board of directors of the association, we decided to hold it online instead at the same time. We would like to hold as many real-time sessions as possible so that participation can be done as with a regular academic meeting. We also would like to record the content of the meetings so that the presentations of the meetings can be observed for a period of time after the end of the event.
The main theme of this general meeting is "In Search of New Developments in Epidemiology." Epidemiology is a methodology applicable to various fields and has made significant contributions to the clarification of risk and defense factors for major illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular, and infectious diseases. On the other hand, it is expected that dealing with diseases and health disorders related to intricately intertwining lifestyles and genetic factors will be the mainstream in the future. It is expected that in regards to the relationship between such diseases and disorders and individual factors, it will become more complicated to prove the causation using epidemiological methods. Breakthroughs to prove causality with larger-scale studies, more accurate exposure indices and development of outcomes are required. In recent years, new methods that have been adopted in the field of epidemiology such as the development of new biomarkers through Omics analysis, the development of the Mendel randomization method, the implementation of biometric and diagnostic imaging data using devices, and from the macro perspective of social epidemiology, I think there have been significant advances in data analysis methods due to the popularization of computers. In this general meeting, we would like to view such new developments in epidemiology and make this an academic general meeting that will serve as a guidepost for future epidemiological research.
It is unfortunate that we cannot hold this event locally in Saga City. However, we would like to aggressively take up the challenge of this association holding it online for the first time. This is our first attempt at this and it may cause various inconveniences due to technical inadequacies, etc., however, by having many members participating, we hope there will be an opportunity for further epidemiological development through enthusiastic discussions.
